Refund and policy abuse: Why fraud teams must expand their role in organizations

9:15am9:45am
Digital Fraud Session
Room 26A

Abuse of return policies, promotional codes, loyalty programs, and more has been growing, and fraud departments often are dealing with the mess. Bad actors are coordinating on public forums to share and sell abuse methods and promotional codes, which has significantly increased these types of abuse and impacted retailers' profits. To attack the problem, fraud departments must work with other areas of the business to implement additional policies and processes to curb abuse. This session will help retailers understand the full impact of various types of policy abuse – including an insidious type of return fraud – and present ways to mitigate them.

Based on her memoir, Walder shares her riveting life story of a young woman who went straight from her college sorority to the CIA and, later, the FBI. Keeping groups on the edge of their seats, she details her transition from special operations to educator, sharing her inspiring message: don't try to change who you are to fit what you think the job wants you to be. Embracing the question “why not” leads to life-changing opportunities.  This approach and a problem-solving perspective as a female in a male-dominated field will deliver a unique look inside her unconventional career. As Walder presents, audiences are provided with a fresh insight into their own professional paths through her examples of listening to her gut, taking chances and seizing opportunities.

This program is open to female retailers registered with a full conference and expo pass. This program can be added to your on-site experience during the registration process. For questions, please contact programs@nrf.com.

Strategizing the investigative Interview: Not a one-size-fits-all approach

4:30pm5:15pm
Keynote Session
CIS Security Solutions Theatre
A successful investigative interview begins well before the subject enters the room and prior to any questions ever being asked. Often, the most important part of an investigation is the preparation for the interview.  Taking into consideration the level of available evidence, the characteristics of the subject and the potential implications of their admission all play a factor in the selection of the interview strategy.  Are there explanations for the evidence? Who else may be involved?  What do we know about the subject?  All of these questions, and more, help to determine the best approach for the investigator to take.  In this session, attendees will learn what key areas are important in selecting an interview strategy and how they may impact the most important phase of the interview – the preparation.
